During tonight’s (16 April) ‘Claps for Carers’ moment at 8pm, ITV will halt live TV to deliver a poignant message from those working against the coronavirus on the NHS frontline.

The tribute will see NHS workers thank the UK public for staying indoors, as well as offering their support and love during this national crisis.

Reminding people to look after their mental wellbeing in lockdown, doctors, nurses and care providers will advise the UK public to stay at home but also stay in touch.

The tribute culminates with healthcare workers clapping – timed in unison with those clapping on the streets.

NHS Charities Together and ITV hope the film will be shared beyond the moment itself in order to spread the message of solidarity. It will dovetail with ITV’s NHS Day, which works to highlight the vital work of Britain’s health service workers in tackling the coronavirus.

The moment also forms part of the recently re-launched mental wellness initiative from the broadcaster, Britain Get Talking, which is supported by charities Mind and YoungMinds. The campaign continues to encourage viewers to share their messages of love and support; more than three million people have already taken immediate action to talk to someone.

Clare Phillips, director of social purpose at ITV, said: “This film brings together three things that ITV is pouring energy into right now – encouraging people to stay at home, reminding people about the importance of looking after their mental wellness, and celebrating the NHS heroes who are doing everything for us.

“It’s so important that people stay connected – that’s what Britain Get Talking was always about – but it’s especially important now.”
